What Does SFP Mean in an MVHR System?

When comparing MVHR units, you may come across a figure called SFP, or Specific Fan Power. It is an important measurement used to show how efficiently the fans within a ventilation system use electricity.

What Is Specific Fan Power?

Specific Fan Power measures the amount of electrical power required to move a certain volume of air through the ventilation system.

It is normally expressed in W/(l/s). In simple terms, a lower SFP generally indicates that the fans require less electrical power to deliver the required airflow.

Why Does SFP Matter?

MVHR systems are designed to operate continuously, so fan efficiency can have an impact on the overall energy consumption of the system.

Choosing an appropriately sized MVHR unit with efficient EC fans can help provide the required ventilation rates while keeping electrical demand low.

However, the MVHR unit itself is only part of the system. Correct duct sizing, installation and commissioning are also important, as excessive resistance within the ductwork can make the fans work harder.

Choosing the Right MVHR Unit

When specifying an MVHR system, SFP should be considered alongside airflow performance, heat recovery efficiency, controls and the requirements of the property.

At Quiet-Vent, we supply MVHR units and ventilation components for a wide range of residential projects, helping installers select products suited to the required application.
